what is hollow knight?

hollow knight is a 2017 metroidvania created by team cherry about a decaying, plague infested kingdom of bugs. you play as a quiet warrior known only as the knight, called back here by something unknown.

my history with it

i first played hollow knight in 2018 on the switch and i haven't been normal about it since. 2018 and 2019 were kind of rough points in my life for an assortment of reasons which is maybe why i latched onto it so hard. i don't want to give too many details for my parent's sake but during some of the worst of it i was asked to stay upstairs until it was over. during this time i played hollow knight because of course i did. there's a specific room that i struggled with for a while during this. i'm a lot better at the game now but any time i end up in that room again it reminds me of that moment a little. it doesn't upset me, just.. reminds me. it's odd what sticks with you when bad things happen, isn't it?


at some point the interest faded into the background, still one of my favorites of all time but i wasn't quite as fixated. i made a few attempts at replays but got frustrated at crystal peaks and got stuck. this year i got ahold of a laptop that could actually run video games decently well and started a replay. i am significantly better at video games than i was as a teenager now and could get a lot further, so i actually 112%ed the game for the first time! (in my original playthrough i reached about 106% before getting completely stuck -_-). nightmare king grimm and pantheon 5 are still out of my skillset but eh, progress.
